WARSAW - Poland is ready to help Ukraine by providing it with weapons, says Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.

“I know you are very much interested in the weapons issue. So I’ll tell you that I haven’t heard of any embargo on arms sales to Ukraine. If Ukraine is interested in this, surely Poland is absolutely open to such talks,” Komorowski said at a press conference following negotiations with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Warsaw on Dec. 17.

Poland will be helping Ukraine strengthen its defense and security capabilities, Komorowski said. In particular, the two countries are setting up a Ukrainian-Polish-Lithuanian brigade, he said.

“This is not a brigade that should go to the war in Donbas, but it should be a brigade in which the Ukrainian army would like to gain experience that would be useful to continue the process of approaching the standards of the NATO armies,” he said.

Poland respects Ukraine’s right to defend its territory from external aggression, Komorowski said. “We fully understand the need to increase Ukraine’s defense capabilities today. After all, the fresh experience of aggression should prompt it to act to strengthen its forces. Therefore, Poland has supported and supports Ukraine and will fulfill the decisions of the Newport NATO summit on bringing the Ukrainian defense system closer to NATO standards,” he said.
