Ukraine should be grateful to the U.S. because its support helped prevent Donbas from turning into a frozen conflict zone, Ukraine's second president Leonid Kuchma has said.

“We should be grateful to the U.S. for the fact that at this difficult and tragic hour for Ukraine, America has assumed a clear and unambiguous position,” Kuchma said at the 11th Yalta European Strategy (YES) annual forum in Kyiv on Friday, Sep. 12.

He suggested that, if not for the U.S., Europe would have agreed to freeze the conflict in Ukraine similar to what happened to Transdniestria.

In addition, Kuchma said that Ukraine should deepen cooperation with China.

“The opportunities that China possesses could help resolve a lot of economic problems that we have today,” Kuchma.

As concerns the European Union, Ukraine has not implemented any joint high-technology projects with it over the 23 years of its independence, Kuchma said with regret.
