You're reading: Kuchma: Materials about Melnychenko’s contacts with Russian security services passed to SBU long ago

Second Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma (1994-2005) has said that evidence of former State Guard Department officer Mykola Melnychenko's contacts with the Russian security services were transferred to the Ukrainian side under his presidency.

"It will soon become clear what his relations with the Russian security services were like. Russia transferred all the materials about those meetings with Melnychenko under [my presidency]. It is well known. They [the materials] are with the SBU," he said after questioning at the Prosecutor General’s Office on Thursday.

Kuchma also said that if certain officials had known in 1999 that Melnychenko had bugged the president’s office, then they would have been guilty of high treason.
