Kyiv City Council has introduced a moratorium on construction within the buffer zone around Kyiv's Saint Sophia Cathedral.

A total of 72 councilors supported the decision on Thursday.

According to the decision, construction is banned on Ilyinska, Reitarska, Olesia Honchara, Velyka Zhutomurska, and Mykhailivska streets and on Mykhailivsky Lane until a detailed plan of the buffer zone territory of Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral is approved.

The decision does not apply to new construction of facilities needed for the buffer zone’s maintenance and the city’s vital activities.

Kyiv City Council ordered Kyiv City Administration to draw up a draft plan of the buffer zone around Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral using funds of the city’s budget.

The decision was made in the wake of a meeting of the humanitarian public council chaired by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, which was held on March 17, 2011.
