You're reading: Kyiv does not confirm German media claims of Poroshenko speaking to Barroso about Putin

The Ukrainian president's administration has not confirmed claims that President Petro Poroshenko informed European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso of his telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the Russian leader allegedly made sharp remarks about several European capitals.

“We do not confirm the information published by this newspaper,” Poroshenko’s press secretary Sviatoslav Tseholko told Interfax-Ukraine, when commenting on an article published in Germany’s Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

The Ukrainian authorities have a “negative attitude to any speculation that may jeopardize the efforts of all sides to launch a peace process,” he said.

Reports recently appeared in the German media that allegedly cite a record of Poroshenko’s conversation with EU leaders. Referring to Poroshenko, the reports claim that during one of the telephone conversations between the Ukrainian and Russian leaders, Putin allegedly said that Russian forces could reach not only Kyiv, but also Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw and Bucharest within two days.

The Russian president’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov dismissed this article as “another newspaper hoax.”
