You're reading: Kyiv enters top three leaders in Eastern Europe in construction of retail space

Kyiv, in terms of the construction of new retail space, was second the among largest cities of Eastern Europe as of the end of Q3, 2012, reads a press release of Colliers International.

According to the analysis of the retail space market in 13 cities, Kyiv – with 354,000 square meters – was second only to Moscow, where 1.035 million square meters of retail space was being built by late Q3, 2012.

Sofia is third, with 207,000 square meters.

The top three occupy 85% of all the retail space under construction in Eastern Europe.

Data for Moscow, St. Petersburg, Warsaw, Budapest, Prague, Kyiv, Bucharest, Bratislava, Zagreb, Sofia, Belgrade, Tirana and Athens were analyzed.

According to the press release, the total supply of high-quality retail space in Eastern Europe by the end of Q3, 2012 came to 15.41 million square meters. The indicator of total supply from 2009 to 2012 almost tripled.

Space in retail centers in the active phase of construction fell by 255,750 square meters in Q3, 2012 compared to Q2, 2012. Retail space at the active phase of construction in the 13 largest cities of Eastern Europe came to some two million square meters of leasing space.

The highest indicators of retail space provision per 1,000 residents as of late Q3, 2012 were registered in Zagreb (1,710 square meters), Bratislava (1,063 square meters) and Sofia (915 square meters). The smallest retail space provision in the region was seen in Athens (64 square meters), Belgrade (148 square meters), Moscow (258 square meters) and Kyiv (258 square meters).
