You're reading: Kyiv not confirming Kazakh nationals’ participation in Ukrainian hostilities

Citizens of Kazakhstan are not participating in hostilities in Ukraine's south-eastern regions, Kazakh Deputy Prosecutor General Andrei Kravchenko has said, referring to Ukrainian officials.

“So far, our Ukrainian colleagues have not confirmed that Kazakh citizens are active in the armed conflict district in Ukraine,” Kravchenko told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Astana on Dec. 19.

However, the Kazakh Prosecutor General’s Office is aware “of such attempts”, he said.

“Today such participation is a crime. If such people are found, they will be held to account in accordance with the law,” Kravchenko said.

Meanwhile, a court in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, issued a guilty verdict to a 30-year-old Kazakh citizen, Yevgeny Vdovenko, for his participation in Ukrainian hostilities on the side of the militia.

When addressing the panel of judges on Dec. 12, Vdovenko explained his recent trip to eastern Ukraine by his ideological convictions. Vdovenko said that he had helped militiamen distribute humanitarian aid, extinguish fires and guard the only road used by refugees to flee the area of fighting and enter Russia.

“We did not blow anything up,” he said.
