The problem of overcrowding in Kyiv's pre-trial detention center will be resolved in a month or two, Kyiv Prosecutor Anatoliy Melnyk has said.

"I think that in a month or two we will manage to reach the limit of capacity [in Kyiv;s pre-trial detention center] – 3,171 people. This is the maximum number of prisoners [that can be] in Kyiv’s detention center," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on April 10.

He also added: "The overcrowding rate in July [2011] was 1,040 [prisoners], while today the rate is between 100 and 200 people."

He said that the problem of overcrowding in detention centers was being resolved due to the fact that the approach to selecting the measure of restraint of detention would be applied "in a more weighted way" and that alternative measures of restraint (travel bans and bail) would be chosen more often.

The prosecutor said that some people had already been released from Kyiv’s detention center due to the entry into force of the law on the humanization of criminal responsibility and the decriminalization of certain economic crimes.
