You're reading: Kyiv prosecutors probing National Bank abuses, not its chief

Prosecutors in Kyiv are investigating two criminal cases over the abuse of office and forgery by officials from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Kyiv prosecutor's office spokeswoman Olena Yakhno said.

These are inquiries into facts, not the NBU chief Valeriya Gontareva, she told Interfax-Ukraine. Stressing that the bank chief is not treated as a suspect.

The first inquiry was prompted by allegations of “abuse of power or office” received from someone called Yakovenko; the second probe was launched into “official negligence” on the basis of a ruling issued by Kyiv’s Perchersky District Court last December.

It was reported that in December 2014 the Pechersky court ordered Kyiv prosecutors to open a criminal inquiry into the NBU chief Gontareva on suspicion of abuse of power or office.

The city prosecutors said at the time that they will comply with the court order as soon as they get one.
