You're reading: Kyiv schools to cancel classes until Feb. 5 due to severe cold

Schools, colleges, vocational and technical institutions in Kyiv will cancel classes starting on Feb. 1 due to the severe cold, the press service of Kyiv City State Administration reported on Tuesday.

Kyiv City State Administration Head Oleksandr Popov signed a relevant order on Monday.

"It has been a long time since the temperature dropped to minus 28 degrees Celsius. So we’ll have to excuse our children from attending schools and vocational schools, and they will have holidays until Monday," Popov said on air of Kyiv TV Channel.

According to his order, schools will be closed until Feb. 5, but if air temperatures fail to rise this week, the vacations will be extended, the city head said.

The largest numbers of schools was closed in Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr and Rivne regions.

Ukrainian Emergency Situations Ministry reported on Tuesday that thirty people have frozen to death in Ukraine over the period of severe frost, with 21 dying on the streets.

Authorities have opened 1,590 shelters to provide food and heat.
