Moscow - The Ukrainian authorities should have removed UN symbols from the helicopters used by the Ukrainian National Guard near Kramatorsk, a UN official said.

UN official Eri Kaneko said in a letter addressed to Russia Today that the UN Department for Peacekeeping Operations and the UN Department of Field Support are discussing the matter with the Ukrainian authorities and countries providing military contingents for UN operations and property for peacekeeping missions have a duty to remove all UN symbols from this property upon its return to the country of origin or after its official use by the UN.

In addition, the letters written by the UN to the countries providing military contingents for peacekeeping operations, which have been provided to Russia Today, state that governments have the right to use aircraft bearing special identification signs solely for flights conducted as part of United Nations Organization missions.

According to earlier reports, the Ukrainian military used helicopters bearing UN symbols that had been used in a peacekeeping operation in Congo near Kramatorsk.
