Municipal enterprise Kyiv Metropoliten, in partnership with MasterCard and state-controlled Oschadbank (Kyiv), has introduced contactless payments using bank cards.

Oschadbank Board Chairman Andriy Pyshny, when presenting the project, said that Kyiv has now become the fifth city in the world, after London, St. Petersburg, Chicago and Bucharest, where metro travel can be paid for with contactless payment bank cards.

“Seventeen subway stations in Kyiv today are equipped with such terminals. They will be at each station,” the banker said.

MasterCard Europe CEO for Ukraine and Moldova Vira Platonova said the project was implemented within three months.

“This is the fastest project implementation in the world – passage using contactless MasterCard cards in the subway… One can enter the Kyiv subway using any card of the world with the MasterCard contactless payments brand,” she added.

According to Platonova, there are currently around 150 million MasterCard contactless cards in the world, including around 1.5 million in Ukraine.
