Moscow is urging Kyiv to immediately grant special status to certain districts in Donbas, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

“It’s necessary to introduce the law on special status immediately, as was agreed upon, rather than delay this happy moment until the Ukrainian authorities hope to win these territories by force,” Lavrov said in a Saturday analytical program hosted by Sergei Brilyov.

The Russian minister ridiculed statements by Ukrainian authorities that they would “talk about elections and special status only with people to be elected based on the conditions being currently put forward by the Kyiv authorities, whose essence is that Kyiv wants to control these territories.”

“If the Kyiv authorities achieve this, perhaps they won’t want to grant special status to anybody,” he said.

“Russia will be seeking to ensure strict observance of the agreements, and someone will have to look into the Verkhovna Rada resolution to this end,” he said.
