Kyiv, April 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Fifty kilograms of gaseous ammonia mixture leaked at OJSC Azot in Cherkasy early on Friday, the city administration reported.

“This leakage occurred as a result of the activation of an alarm valve in a carbamide production department of Plant M-6, which was shut down for repairs yesterday,” the head of the civil defense department at the city’s executive committee, Yuriy Kulynych, said.

He said that company ‘s management had failed to immediately report on the accident.

The city’s chief sanitary doctor, Vasyl Zahorodny, said that after three or four hours, the concentration of ammonia had exceeded maximally permissible levels by 1.7 times at the protection zone and by 1.4 times in the area near School No. 13.

“This was a short-term excess in the content of ammonia in the air, therefore, it posed no danger to the lives of citizens,” he said.

Zahorodny also said that the company’s managers would be fined UAH 102-420.
