Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has appointed the deputy head of Kyiv City State Administration, Leonid Novokhatko, as the culture minister of Ukraine. 

The relevant decree has been posted on the presidential Web site.

Novokhatko was born on January 11, 1954 in the village of Vechirky of Poltava region. In 1975 he graduated from Poltava’s Korolenko National Pedagogical University, took a post-graduate course and PhD at Kyiv’s Taras Shevchenko National University. He is a doctor of Historical Sciences, professor, honored science and engineering worker of Ukraine.

In 1993 he led the department on relations with public unions, and worked as deputy head of the main department on information and relations with the press and public of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

In 1994 he headed the humanitarian policy service of the president’s administration.

From 1996 for nine years he worked first as deputy culture and art minister of Ukraine, and later as first deputy culture and art minister of Ukraine.

In 2005-2007, he led the department at the Kyiv National Culture and Arts University of Ukraine.

From 2007 until June 2010, he worked as the first deputy director general of Ukrinform information agency.

In June 2010 he was appointed the deputy head of Kyiv City State Administration.
