Very poignant article. To those of us living in the West, it reveals some shocking truths about the state of things in Ukraine!

No government that, by action or inaction, condones these atrocities is legitimate, and no population that is subjected to this state of affairs is free.

Isn't it something, that these people suffer this way while Rada members & oligarcs don't pay taxes. How can you fund any system without tax revenue. This country should be reported to the Hague for crimes against humanity. Ukraine has had one holodomor. Is this another one?

Ukraine's leaders really should be tried in an international court. Sanctions Please!

To be suspect but not tried and once you are in the prison system the chances of living dropped to zero. This is a big injustice for Ukraine. pften poor people with no money face death. How can people contract HIV so quickly. I can't believe those who behave as if Ukraine is a developed nation with all necessary tools. Ukraine is sending soldiers to Africa, sending humanitarian aid to Turkey what a load of rubbish. You should clean your backyard first.

Is this a shocking article? Yes it is, and is shocking in a long row of shocking articles. Is this a scandal? Unkraine seems to consist out of scandals. Both political world and society seems a mess. Some commentators nowadays blame Germany for preventing Ukraine to become a EU member because of deference to Russia. But the real thing is that everybody sees clearly that on no level in Ukraine, modern standards of living are existant. Neither laws nor judical system, neither democratic structures nor executve legitimacy, neither a health system that is just nor a educational system in which everybody has the same chances. Neither the treatment of minorities like homosexuals or disabled people nor developping appropriate AIDS programs on its own, corruption instead of fair conditions to everybody. You can count on and on - Ukraine is a mess, nothing but a mess. People live because they try to help themselves somehow, but as you see, as soon as they get into state dentention it's over. You don't get AIDS just like that..AIDS is carried to another person by sexual action - if prisoners get it it is clear that they have been sexually abused by other prisoners or officials. Living hell is the right headline for the article. Den Haag would really be the right answer to all the ugly things that happen. Den Haag would have to deal with Ukraine for years, if trying to clean up the whole thing.

This is why the Tymoshenko case is relevent and important to all Ukrainians. If a powerful political figure such as Yulia cannot get fair legal proceedings, then the average Ukrainian stands no chance of justice, decent treatment of human rights and any hope of proving innocents. I just cannot understand why this kind of system is tollerated and there is no complete public outrage and demand for change? It is mind boggling?

THIS IS WHAT YOU GET when you vote for sovieticus Donetsk Russians like Yanukovych and Azarov and political party like P.O.R They hate Ukraine and Ukrainians and don't give a Fu... about anyone that is in their view an expendable little Ukrainian that has no money. As the only thing the soviet Russian loving Donetsk ass, cares about is what he can get out of the country, and not what he can do for the country and its people.

We must understand that Ukraine is not the country that Mr Yanukovych and Mr Azarov really has in the stone that they call a heart.

Sovieticus has never and will never care about the little guy like you and me.

If they did why is there no real investigation into this shocking matter? It is time to get this guys and P.O.R. out of Gov. and put them on in-front of a court, not a court Ukrainian government court of course; But one made by the people for the people of the people, then and only then can we hope for a rightful court of justice that will clear up and wipe out this Russian virus of homo sovieticus in the nation.

More of the machinations of the puppet master in Moscow. Yanukovych drinks the same Kool-Aid (Orangina) as Lukashenk!. Hopefully the realizations currently going on in Mother Russia will transpire to Ukraine and Belarus. This Bolshevik mental cancer needs to dissipate. Ukraine should be the leading economic giant of Europe; not Russia's bitch. Viva Bandera!!!!!

Majority of those guys in prison are real criminals and I do not really care that they are suffering. They steal, kill and harass good people and they finally get something they deserve. This is the reality. They are not nice girls and innocent boys. When such people steal your wallets and when your daughters cannot be safe in downtown even during the day do you really care about these people? They deserve this.

We are fed up by criminals and those eternal TV shows about Son'ka Golden Hand, "Brigada" and Mishka Yaponchik. They deserve this.

After WWII Stalin cut down the criminal rate very fast (old people ADMIRE this) when such people were shot without courtroom. It is cruel but there are no other methods. These people violated the law and others should know that if they go this way, they will also die from AIDS, TB, etc. We are fed up with all that talking about the human rights of criminals. They are NOT HUMAN beings, they deserved this.

What was this "suffering mother" doing when she was supposed to bring up her kids? This is a result of her upbringing. My child is not stealing, my child is the next generation of A-students and speaks 5 languages. Why am I supposed to care about such criminals and pay taxes for those prisons? It would be a good idea to shot a few thousand of those criminals who steal and kill. Just to give others an idea that we are fed up. I do not steal. My parents did not. My grandparents were teachers. Why should we care that somebody is suffering in prison and feed them?

I know one mother who had 2 sons. One spent a year in a prison for stealing and the second died from TB after living some kind of criminal life. Why should I feel sorry? She was sleeping with all guys along the street when these boys were little. She spent all her money on clothes to attract married men. She did not care about her sons. Now she is also suffering.:))) It is ridiculous to feel sorry for such mothers. Sons of good mothers are good citizens. They work hard and nobody is going to arrest them. This article makes me mad. I do not know any of my relatives who has ever had issues with legal system. All of us work and study. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT LIFE OF CRIMINALS IN PRISON. Our society does not need them. I would love them to be shot and forgotten.

Criminals create the hell to other people, to those who work hard. They deserve this hell now.

Ah, poor girls, they die from AIDS. Probably, they have slept with everything what is able to move along the street for their whole life starting at the age of 12. Who cares that they die? We don't need them.

You guests that think everyone is guilty until proven innocent should be put in Yanu's jails or detention centers and see how you like being beaten, starved and humiliated. There is no justice in Ukraine, only a President that has a been a criminal all his life seeking retribution on those that oppose his will. The police there are a freaking joke as worthless as the judges. Reform your country similar to what Georgia did and start over new or keep getting what you have always got.

Even if your innocent, you get put in with criminals with diseases that are not treated and end up getting their diseases or sicknesses also. These places are breeding grounds for disease. It sounds more like a gulag from the Nazi Era minus the gassing. I know people in Ukr that had been thrown in jail just because their boss did not pay the cops their monthly fee /bribe or percentage of money they made. Now that a real Criminal is in charge of Ukraine, you know what you've got.You see it. The Femen women have more intelligence and courage than the uncaring idiots that post here.
