A total of 5,500 people have become final participants in the UEFA volunteer program to select those who will work during the Euro 2012 European Football Championship in Ukraine and Poland, Director of Euro 2012 in Ukraine Markiyan Lubkivsky has said.
The volunteers were chosen after nearly 13,000 interviews, which were conducted in the eight host cities in the two countries over the last three months, he said.
"The UEFA Euro 2012 volunteer program has attracted a record number of applicants – 23,965. From now on, 5,500 of them are part of a team, and they will work side by side with more than 650 employees of UEFA and local organizing committees in order to make Euro 2012 an unforgettable event," the press service of the Euro 2012 Local Organizing Committee in Ukraine quoted Lubkivsky as saying.
He said that volunteers play a crucial role in organizing the European football championship, as they will help to effectively implement all Euro 2012 projects.
"The volunteers are the face of the sporting event," Lubkivsky said.
Contracts with volunteers will be signed in January and February, distance learning will start in March, and training sessions will be held in April-May. Operating activities will begin in late April and last until early July 2012, with the duration of volunteer involvement being determined by the nature of the work.
