Jailed former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko is in grave health and may need another operation after intestinal surgery a few days ago, the People's Self-Defense Party said on Monday, citing the ex-minister's wife, Iryna Lutsenko.

However, a second operation “is out of the question” before post-surgery tests of tissue samples from Lutsenko, a statement from the party quoted Iryna Lutsenko as saying after talking to doctors at Kyiv’s Oberig clinic, where the former minister had his surgery.

The doctors assured the ex-minister’s wife that they were carrying out all the necessary tests.

Lutsenko has been serving a four-year term in a prison in Chernihiv region since August 2012 after being convicted of abuse of office.

He agreed to undergo surgery to remove an adhesion in his intestine in late December 2012. The surgery was expected to take place in early January. Larysa Sarhan, press officer for the People’s Self-Defense Party, said Lutsenko would be treated in a private clinic in Kyiv at his own expense.

However, the ex-minister was only admitted to Oberig on January 20 and had his surgery a couple of days later.
