The chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, Volodymyr Lytvyn, has said that he accepts the choice of the Russian people, who voted for Vladimir Putin at the presidential election.

"I respect the Russian people’s choice," Lytvyn said at a briefing during a working visit to Zhytomyr region.

The head of the parliament added that Ukraine and Russia are linked by historical ties and in future "our destiny is to have close contacts, and it is important for us which policy will be supported by the leadership of Russia in its relation to Ukraine."

Lytvyn said if a policy of mutual fighting was followed in bilateral relations between the states "the situation in Ukraine will not improve."
