You're reading: Medvedev: Gazprom insists Ukraine repay debts in full

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said he will order the Russian Finance Ministry to weigh all possibilities and risks of the provision to Ukraine of a $2-3 billion loan to pay Gazprom for the gas supplied to Ukraine.

“I will order the Finance Ministry to weigh all current problems and
possibilities associated with Ukraine’s current extremely low credit
rating and other aspects of Russian-Ukrainian cooperation in this
direction,” Medvedev said during a meeting with Gazprom CEO Alexei
Miller on Tuesday.

He also said that Gazprom’s decision to recall shipments at a discount was appropriate in the current setting.

“Anyway, Gazprom must insist that the Ukrainian counteragent repay the debts in full,” Medvedev told Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller.

“The decision to scrap shipments on easy terms you made in this setting looks absolutely appropriate,” Medvedev added.

“Our Ukrainian partners informed us yesterday that they will not be able to pay for February gas supplies in full,” Miller said.

Miller said Ukraine owed the company $1.529 billion for gas in total and described what measures the company intended to take.
