Simferopol -- The Mejlis (parliament) of the Crimean Tatar People has said it is concerned over cases of kidnapping and disappearances of people in Crimea, as well as Crimean authorities' lack of response to such cases.

“Over the last few months Crimean society has faced an extremely
dangerous phenomenon, which isn’t new to Crimea – the abduction of
people,” reads an appeal to the international organizations “On the
Prevention in Crimea of Kidnapping and the Disappearance of People”,
which was approved at a Mejlis sitting on Thursday, the parliament’s
press service reported.

The document says that in early March 2014 Reshat Ametov, father of
three children who belongs to Muslim congregation, was abducted and
later found dead, having been brutally tortured.

“The illegal detention and forceful transport under guard of Reshat
Ametov in the middle of the day from the central square of Simferopol
was recorded by journalists on video, but until now the outrageous
murder of Reshat Ametov hasn’t been investigated, and the criminals
haven’t been punished yet,” the report said.

Besides, in late May 2014, three activists of the NGO “Ukrainsky Dim”
(Ukrainian House), citizens of Simferopol Leonid Korzh and Seiran
Zinedinov, disappeared. Their fate is unknown so far.

“The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People treats such acts of violence
against the civilians of Crimea as actions of intimidation of Crimean
society, and the failure to investigate these crimes as evidence that
present authorities ignore the elementary human right to the life and
safety of people’s relatives and family. The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar
People calls on international organizations and international human
rights organizations to apply all its efforts to prevent an escalation
of the violence against the peaceful population in Crimea,” the report
said.
