You're reading: Militants control territory with 55 percent of Ukrainian coalmines

A total of 150 coalmines extract coal in Ukraine, and 83 coalmines of all types of ownership are located on the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions which are under control of militants, the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry of Ukraine has reported.

“37 mines out of 90 mines under control of the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry are located on the territory which is under control of Ukrainian authorities, including 25 mines that extract coal, 12 mines in the regime of maintaining vital activity and 53 mines located on the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions under control of militants,” the ministry said.

The ministry said in January-September 2014 coal extraction in Ukraine came to Hr 53.4 million tonnes, which is 15 percent down year-over-year, including 43.9 million tonnes of steam coal.

The enterprises of the state sector extracted Hr 15.4 million tonnes of coal or 28.8 percent of total extraction.

The ministry added that as of early October six mines are completely disconnected from power and 17 mines have partial electricity supplies.

The ministry also said that as of Oct. 17, 2014 127 settlements are left without electricity due to armed hostilities in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
