You're reading: Military prosecutors charge ex-chief of Ukrainian military unit in Crimea with treason

A former commander of a military unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces which was stationed in Crimea has been charged with treason, desertion and insubordination and put on the wanted list, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine has reported.

“The military prosecutor’s office of Vinnytsia garrison of the Central region of Ukraine in compliance with the law, reported about the suspicion against the former commander of a military unit of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which was stationed in Crimea where it received and serviced aircraft of tactical aviation, of committing crimes under Part 1 of Article 111 (high treason), part 1 of Article 408 (desertion) and part 2 of Article 402 (insubordination) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” the statement reads.

According to the press service, he is suspected of committing treason in March 2014 when he facilitated the transfer of the his unit’s personnel to service in the Russian Armed Forces, and later failed to comply with orders to redeploy the military unit, its military equipment and property to mainland Ukraine.

At present, he serves as a commandant in the Russian Armed Forces, the press service reported.
