Moldova leads among the CIS countries on the annual Press Freedom Index held by the Reporters without Borders non-profit organization.

According to Moldovan mass media reports released on Wednesday, Moldova went one step down year-on-year and is 56th out of 180 world countries.

Estonia (11th), Lithuania (32nd) and Latvia (37th) are leaders among the post-Soviet countries.

Finland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Andorra head the index in 2014, same as in 2013.

Russia is 148th in the rating, while press freedom situation is worse in Belarus (157th), Azerbaijan (160th), and Kazakhstan (161st).

The last positions in the Reporters without Borders’ 2014 index are occupied by Syria, Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea, same as in 2013.
