You're reading: Poll: More and more people are against granting state status to Russian language

A total of 43 percent of Ukrainians support granting a state status to the Russian language, but a half (51 percent) are opposed to this, and 5 percent found it difficult to answer in a poll conducted by Rating sociological group.

“It should be said that in 2009 the number of supporters of there being two state languages prevailed over the number of opponents, while in 2010-2011 their number became equal, and from the middle of 2012 the number of opponents of bilingualism was firmly higher (51-52 percent),” reads a press release from the sociological group.

Among the biggest supporters of bilingualism are citizens of the Donbas (85 percent), and the south and east of Ukraine (69 percent and 57 percent respectively).

The poll was held among Ukrainians older than 18 years from September 26 to October 6, 2013. The poll took the form of face-to-face interviews.
