Moscow demands that a number of European states investigate its citizens' participation in battle actions in eastern Ukraine as mercenaries and condemn it, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Russia studied with deep concern the report of the Italian media
outlet Il Giornale regarding the participation of mercenaries from some
European countries, in particular from Sweden, Finland, Baltic states
and France, in battle actions on the side of Ukrainian punitive
operation participants within the so-called Azov battalion, whose
activities are financed and directed by oligarch, governor Ihor
Kolomoisky,” the document said.

“If information stipulated in the named report is true, this is a new
confirmation of the involvement of foreign rebels in the domestic armed
conflict in Ukraine, which is not of international character,” the
Foreign Ministry said.

“We demand the official authorities of the named states hold
comprehensive investigation of the facts mentioned and condemn
participation of mercenaries in military actions in eastern Ukraine,”
the statement said.
