Moscow said NATO is sending out "the wrong signal" by taking up the situation in Ukraine.

“It sends out the wrong signal when NATO begins to give consideration
to the situation in Ukraine. And the secretary general of NATO has even
deemed it appropriate to announce that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is
not a top priority for Ukrainian leadership. Does that mean that
membership must remain a priority task albeit not a top priority? This
is one more attempt to make a decision on behalf of the Ukrainian
people,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its website,
www.mid.ru, on Thursday.

“It is our strong advice to everybody that they abandon provocative
statements and respect the non-allied status of Ukraine as enshrined in
its law ‘Fundamentals of Domestic and Foreign Policy,'” the ministry
said.
