You're reading: Naftogaz says it faces ‘temporary halt’ in gas supplies from Poland

Ukraine's Naftogaz said it was informed by its Polish partner Gaz System S.A. about a "forced temporary halt of gas supplies to Ukraine" for two days. The Polish operator of the gas transit network said the emergency move came as a result of a sharp drop of gas supplies from Russia.

“Naftogaz is discussing the situation with the Polish operators and suppliers of gas to clear up the character of the problem,” the company said in a statement. “Companies are holding consultations about the schedule for renewal of supplies and the mechanism for prompt response for such risks in the future.”

Naftogaz said that the Polish PGNiG informed them that as of the beginning of the week Russia’s Gazprom, the supplier, stopped shipping full volumes of contracted gas. The Monday contract was fulfilled by 20 percent, while the Tuesday contract by 24 percent, Natfogaz said.

The drop in supplies affects Poland’s re-export of gas to Ukraine, the reverse flow. Ukraine has stopped buying gas from Gazprom in June, but transit through its territory has remained uniterrupted.

Sergei Kupriyanov, spokesman for Russian supplier Gazprom, denied any drop in gas exports to Poland, according to Associated Press. He said Gazprom is shipping the same amount of gas — 23 million cubic meters a day — as before.
