Tbilisi - Georgia is the largest beneficiary of NATO aid in the field of combat readiness compared to Ukraine and Moldova, and the special package approved at the Wales summit has been implemented well enough, James Appathurai, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, said on March 30.

Russia has been pressuring Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia into a change of their foreign policy, he said in a videoconference arranged by the Atlantic Council of Georgia.

NATO thinks that the three countries deserve greater support to ensure their combat readiness, Appathurai said. He added that Georgia was the largest beneficiary, and NATO was opening a training center and a combat readiness school in that country.

Possible unilateral support to the Georgian Defense Ministry with equipment or coaching programs can supplement NATO efforts, he said.

In the opinion of Appathurai, the implementation of the NATO special package for Georgia approved by the Wales summit has been progressing well.

Cooperation has gained a very good speed, and NATO experts are helping Georgia to open a modern training center. Besides, NATO has formed a working group which will visit Georgia shortly, and joint exercises will be held in Georgia in summer, Appathurai said.
