You're reading: NATO officials: NATO has no plans to deploy large forces near Russian borders

NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow has refuted reports that NATO plans to deploy large military contingents near Russian borders. "I totally dismiss claim by Dep[uty] Defense Minister Antonov that #NATO plans to deploy large military contingents close to #Russia's borders," Vershbow tweeted on April 9.

“Any #NATO reinforcements are in full conformity w/[ith] NATO-Russia Founding Act, which #Russia is blatantly breaching,” he stressed.

Earlier on April 9 Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said that the position of NATO hardliners seeking to restrain Russia had prevailed against the backdrop of the crisis in Ukraine.
