You're reading: No military parade to mark Independence Day in Kyiv, Independence March planned instead

On Independence Day, an Independence March will be held in the city center of Kyiv, the administration of the president of Ukraine has reported.

“On Aug. 24, unlike the last year, the military parade isn’t planned. No military equipment will be used in the events on Aug. 25 on Maidan Nezalezhnosti [Independence Square] in the center and on Khreschatyk Street. An Independence March is planned, in the center of which will be a soldier, the defender of Ukraine,” First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Vitaliy Kovalchuk said at a briefing in Kyiv on Aug. 6.

On Aug. 24, on the Day of the State Flag, official events on Sofiyivska Square will be held, Kovalchuk added.

“At 9 a.m., with the participation of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, a ceremony of hoisting the State Flag of Ukraine will start. It is stipulated that state flags will be simultaneously hoisted in all cities in Ukraine, at military bases. Meanwhile, all Ukrainian embassies in foreign countries also at 0900 local time will hold the ceremony of hoisting the Ukrainian flag,” Kovalchuk told.

A memorial event is planned in the Park of Glory in Kyiv. At 12 a.m., a national minute of silence will be held in the memory of those killed in the anti-terrorist operation [ATO].

Earlier, the press service of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that a parade would be held in Kyiv to mark Independence Day with the participation of military personnel from the Kyiv Garrison, students of military universities, ATO personnel, State Border Guard Service of Ukraine personnel and National Guard of Ukraine personnel. Military equipment was not planned to be used, except for two vehicles (to conduct the parade and its reception).
