You're reading: Number of internally displaced Ukrainians nears million

A total of 942,748 internally displaced people have been registered in Ukraine as of Jan. 26, says Maryna Vorona, a deputy head of the department for social protection of the internally displaced persons at the Ukrainian Ministry of Social Policy.

“We are taking into account people who moved from the temporarily occupied territory and the anti-terrorist operation areas,” she told a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.

For his part, President of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) Ivan Usychenko said that 600,000 Ukrainians fled to neighboring countries, mostly to Russia.

He said that by Jan. 21 the Ukrainian Red Cross had provided aid to over 314,000 internally displaced persons.

“Thanks to resources from international organizations, foundations and the Red Cross movement’s network, as well as charitable contributions, the affected population has received aid of over Hr 105.66 million. Of this, Hr 20 million were provided to hospitals in the form of medication, medical and rehabilitation equipment,” Usychenko said.

The URCS sent nearly Hr 34.42 million in aid to Donetsk region, and around Hr 4.12 million to Mariupol. Luhansk region has received almost Hr 17.46 million.
