You're reading: Odesa checkpoint explosion qualified as terrorist attack

The explosion at a checkpoint in Odesa which left seven people injured is being investigated as a terrorist attack (Article 258 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code), Odesa regional police chief Petro Lutsiuk told reporters on April 25. He said he could not give any further details as the case is being investigated by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU).

A spokesperson for the local SBU office told Interfax they had no information on this matter.

Meanwhile, a law enforcement source said that investigators are pursuing two lines of inquiry: an attack on the checkpoint by unidentified people and reckless handling of a grenade by the victims. The explosion was caused precisely by a grenade, and tires saved the checkpoint from massive casualties and damage, the source said.

It was reported that an explosion occurred early on Friday morning at a checkpoint organized by Odesa-based Euromaidan activists and police. As a result of the explosion, seven people, including a police officer, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
