You're reading: Odessa to commemorate May 2 tragedy victims annually

The acting mayor of Odessa, Oleh Bryndak, has signed a decree declaring May 2 as the day of memory for those killed in the tragic events on May 2, 2014, the city council said. Each year on this day, Ukrainian flags and those of Odessa with mourning ribbons will be lowered half-mast on government, public and residential buildings, according to the document.

Also, use of music and entertainment programs on this day will be restricted.

“None of us can forget this terrifying day. Everyone must draw
conclusions from this tragedy to prevent a repeat of similar events in
our city. So that the memory of the tragic events of that day becomes
the most potent obstacle to any hatred, any standoff, making their
repeat impossible. All of us together must preserve this blessed city
for our children, for all future generations. We can only preserve Odesa
by living in peace,” Bryndak said.

It was reported that at least 46 people were killed and over 200 injured during mass disturbances and a fire in Odesa on May 2.
