Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuriy Prodan has agreed to the holding in Warsaw on May 2 of a trilateral meeting with the European Union and Russia on the gas problem, the press office of EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger has reported.

According to the report, Oettinger was in contact with Prodan who agreed in principle on the date and venue for such a meeting.

European Commission spokesperson Sabine Berger said on Monday that
Oettinger and Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak had discussed by
phone the issues of gas supplies to Ukraine and the EU, as well as the
need to hold a trilateral meeting on this issue as soon as possible.

Berger said that this meeting could be held in Warsaw on May 2 if Prodan agrees to such a date and venue.

Barroso said in his letter sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin in mid-April that the European Commission was ready to hold trilateral consultations with Russia and, with the consent of the Ukrainian government, with Ukraine.

“The proposed consultations should help to avoid an extreme scenario
and safeguard security of supply and transit while at the same time
creating the necessary conditions for a structured cooperation including
notably the modernization of Ukraine’s gas transit system,” reads the
letter.
