You're reading: Official: Four miners victims in accident at Coal Energy mine

An accident at the Sviato-Pokrovska Mine in Donetsk region, which is under control of Coal Energy, killed four miners and another two miners were taken to hospital in Dobropillia as of 1730 Monday, December 16.

The department for the development of basic industrial sectors of
Donetsk Regional Administration reported that the bodies of three miners
had been recovered from the shaft. An operation to recover the body of a
fourth miner was underway.

An ad hoc commission for investigating the cause of the accident at
the coal enterprise is to be headed by the head of the territorial
department of the state service of mining supervision and industrial
safety of Ukraine in Donetsk region, Viacheslav Korol.

The press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office in Donetsk
region reported that a criminal case was opened under part 2 of Article
272 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of safety rules during
operations with heightened danger caused death of people).

“The police are investigating the case. The investigation is being
overseen by the Prosecutor General in Donetsk region,” the press service
said.

The public relations department head at Coal Energy Olena Boichenko
said she was unable to comment on the accident at the mine to
Interfax-Ukraine.

There was a methane gas explosion at the Sviato-Pokrovska Mine in
Donetsk region of Tekhinnovatsiya LLC at 1144 on Monday. Twenty-seven
miners were underground at the time of the explosion.

Coal Energy unites 10 coalmines and enrichment facilities. The
company sells coal to heat producers, coking, chemical and cement
plants, as well as municipalities. Coal Energy also exports coal to
Bulgaria, Slovakia, Moldova, and Turkey.
