The innovative model for the protection of Ukraine's state that proved itself during Euro 2012 will be used by border guards in future, First Deputy Head of the State Border Service of Ukraine Pavlo Shysholin has said.

“All of the innovations that we introduced while preparing for Euro 2012 worked effectively during the championship and will be used after the tournament. We’re already working with the Ukrainian Embassy in Poland, the Foreign Ministry and the State Customs Service on the continuation of joint controls,” he told the Ukraine-2012 Information Center.

Shysholin said that Polish border guards had promised to prepare their proposals regarding the introduction of amendments to the Schengen Borders Code helping conduct joint inspections on the Ukrainian side. He also said that a system of preliminary information about passengers would be actively used.

“The service already gets 50-60% of the information from airlines. We will develop this area. We are planning to introduce such systems at automobile and maritime checkpoints,” he said.

As reported, while preparing for Euro 2012, the State Border Service introduced a number of innovative methods of work that helped reduced the period of inspections at checkpoints by 2.5 times.

In particular, the service organized joint controls on the Ukrainian-Polish border, the handling of vehicles under the principles of one stop, during their movement, cancelled immigrations cards, introduced electronic cards for passport control and created additional mobile workplaces.

In addition, the service introduced a system of preliminary information about passengers and for the first time conducted work in an online mode through Interpol’s databases.
