KYIV, May 17 – A crop duster spreading fertilizers over a field in eastern Ukraine crashed, killing its pilot, while another Ukrainian plane had to make an emergency landing in neighboring Romania, officials said Friday. The pilot of the private crop duster died of injuries in a hospital after the crash in the Donetsk region late Thursday, the Emergency Situations Ministry said. No other details were available. Meanwhile, a small private An-2 airplane that took off from the Carpathian Mountains city of Ivano-Frankivsk bound for the nearby western Ukrainian town of Kosiv made an emergency landing in Romanian territory Thursday afternoon due to a malfunction, the ministry said.

The ministry could not provide details on how many crew members were on board and whether there were injuries. It was also unclear why the plane would have needed to travel over Romanian territory for the flight. Ukrainian border control officials traveled to the landing site in Romania, near the Ukrainian border village of Bila Krynytsia, on Friday to discuss the incident, according to the Interfax news agency.
