You're reading: Over 120 people hospitalized in Kyiv after drinking contaminated water

By the evening of Jan. 15, the number of people in the Bortnychi area of Kyiv complaining of symptoms of an E.coli infection after drinking E. coli-contaminated water, had risen to 128, including 104 children, a spokesperson for Ukraine's State Sanitary-Epidemiological Service said on Jan.16.

Twenty-four of them, including 20 children, were discharged after receiving medical assistance.

Doctors are continuing to monitor 212 people who have come into contact with those infected in the contaminated area, the spokesperson said.

Thanks to the timely shutdown of the well, there is no further risk of some 8,000 people getting the infection simultaneously, the spokesperson said.

It was reported that on Jan. 14 the authorities registered 97 E.coli cases among Bortnychi residents, including 77 children, after they drank contaminated water. Sixty-seven people were hospitalized, the State Sanitary-Epidemiological Service said.

The prosecutor’s office of Darnytsia district in Kyiv launched criminal proceedings into the negligence of officials of Kyivvodokanal water supply company, the press center of the Prosecutor General’s Office reported.
