Rostov-on-Don - Over 400 Ukrainian troops have asked Russian border guards to open a humanitarian corridor to Russia, Vasily Malayev, and an official with the Russian Federal Security Service Department for the Rostov region, told Interfax.

“The request for a humanitarian corridor was made in the early hours
of Monday. Border guards opened a humanitarian corridor and let 438
Ukrainian troops into Russia,” Malayev said.

The Ukrainian troops will be transferred to the checkpoint Matveyev Kurgan to be handed over to Ukraine in the near future.

Among the Ukrainian troops who asked for a humanitarian corridor are over 160 border guards, Malayev said.

A source in the region’s law enforcement bodies told Interfax the
Ukrainian military had crossed the state border at the checkpoint Gukovo
in the Rostov region.

“The situation on the border is now calm. No intensive fighting is
going on the territory of Ukraine near the Rostov region,” the source
said.

Groups of Ukrainian troops have asked to enter the Russian territory
before. In July, 41 Ukrainian troops were allowed to enter Russia and
were later handed over to Ukraine. These troops are now on trial in
Ukraine for “refusal of military service in combat conditions.”

However, such large groups of Ukrainian troops have never crossed the Russian border before.
