Renate Wohlwend, co-rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on the honoring of commitments by Ukraine, said on Tuesday that PACE might continue to monitor Ukrainian politics after the country's presidential election on January 17, 2010.
Wohlwend told a news conference in Kyiv that she had been hoping all the time that PACE would be able to stop monitoring Ukraine soon.
She said she had been persistently asking Ukraine to show a political will to meet its 15-year-old Council of Europe commitments.
She deplored the situation where Ukraine’s political leadership consists of two camps one of which blocks proposals by the other and complained that nothing is being done to end this state of affairs.
She also said she had had a meeting with Ukrainian parliament chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn that resulted in an agreement under which the legislature and PACE monitors are to draw up a "roadmap" for Ukraine to fulfill its Council of Europe commitments.
