You're reading: Party of Regions faction becomes opposition

The parliamentary faction of the Ukrainian Party of Regions is moving into the opposition, faction leader Oleksandr Yefremov said.

“Given that you took the power in your hands, and we can see you have all the capabilities of forming a government and building structures of power, we have decided that we shall be in the opposition,” Yefremov said at a conciliatory council of faction leaders and committee chairs in Kyiv on Monday.

The Party of Regions faction, currently consisting of 130 deputies, remains the largest in Ukrainian parliament, despite 77 of its members having left its ranks over the past few days. At the same time, the number of independents MPs in the parliament has risen to 121. In all, Verkhovna Rada has 450 deputies.
