You're reading: Party of Regions’ organization in Lviv region leaves party

The Party of Regions' organization in the Lviv region believes that, because the program principles presented by the Party of Regions when it was elected are not being fulfilled, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych should form a new government to replace the government led by Mykola Azarov and call early parliamentary elections.

“Responsibility for the deaths of people in peaceful time rests primarily with the administration, which has the powers and the duty to protect the honor, dignity and life of every citizen of the state, even if he violates the law. Apparently, being oriented towards only a specific group of citizens of Ukraine, the leaders of the Party of Regions could not or did not want to heed the position of the other Ukrainians after coming to power. Unfortunately, our attempts to adjust these policies failed and the self-confidence of the Kyiv functionaries prevailed,” the Party of Regions’ organization in the Lviv region said in a statement issued on Friday.

In this regard, the authors of the statement said that “instead of the promised stability and European integration, the country has been put on the verge of a civil war, chaos and division,” and for that reason the Party of Regions’ organization in the Lviv region demands an immediate congress of the party.

“According to the European practices, the Party of Regions’ Chairman Mykola Azarov and his administration are to file their resignation at this congress. The party’s congress is to elect a new leader and the president is to call early parliamentary elections and form a new government. That’s the democratic way,” the statement says.

The Party of Regions’ organization in the Lviv region also said the attempts to continue using force to resolve the conflict “are making it impossible for us to stay in the Party of Regions.”

The Party of Regions’ organization in the Lviv region said they are well aware of the fact that “even a full re-set of the administration in Kyiv will not instantly lead to the prosperity of the country and will not guarantee civil accord in it.”

“Responsible politicians from the opposition cannot pretend not to hear what decisions are made in Crimea or Luhansk, because if they do so they will not be better than the government,” the statement says.

The Party of Regions’ organization in the Lviv region reiterated that the government and the opposition should understand that their victory, if achieved by destroying the unity of the country, will lead to a defeat of the future generations of Ukrainians.

“Only the people of Ukraine can decide who is right, the government or the opposition. And that should be done through elections, first parliamentary elections and then presidential elections, not on city squares. This is the only way we can put an end to this conflict,” the Party of Regions’ organization in the Lviv region said in its statement.
