U.S. journalist Simon Ostrovsky has been detained by the pro-Russian activists in Donetsk and is now under arrest, Sloviansk "people's mayor" Viacheslav Ponomariov told Interfax on April 23. "This journalist, who, according to our information, has U.S. and Israeli citizenship, has indeed been detained by the self-defense forces. According to our information, he is an informer for Right Sector," Ponomariov said. "The journalist has normal living conditions and is being fed," he said.

Earlier on April 23, the pro-Russian activists did not confirm the information on the detention of U.S. journalist Simon Ostrovsky.

A representative of pro-Russian activists based in Sloviansk told Interfax an Israeli journalist had been detained in the city two days ago. “The journalist was released after being identified,” the source said.

In the meantime, OSCE Representative On Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic expressed concerns about the detention of journalists and pressure on the media in the eastern regions of Ukraine and called for the persecution and attacks on journalists to be stopped.

Mijatovic also mentioned the abduction of Simon Ostrovsky from Vice News and called for his immediate release. According to some reports, Ostrovsky was abducted by unknown individuals in military uniform in Sloviansk.
