You're reading: Plane crash near Sevastopol was likely caused by engine failure

Sevastopol - The commission investigating the crash of the Be-12 amphibious aircraft that occurred near Sevastopol on October 12 is considering several theories of the incident, the main being engine failure, a source close in the Black Fleet headquarters told Interfax-AVN.

The Be-12 plane belonging to the Russian Black Sea Fleet crashed in the Crimea near Sevastopol on Friday evening. Three crew members (the commander, the flight navigator and the second pilot) were killed in the crash. The wireless operator survived and was hospitalized with minor injuries.

“According to available information, the most probable theory is engine failure and subsequent tilting of the plane, which the crew apparently failed to deal with,” the source said.

A complete picture of what has occurred will become clear after the information recovered from the flight recorders and the recordings of the conversations between the crew and dispatchers have been studied, the source said.
