You're reading: Police detained armed people attempting to seize Right Sector base in Zhytomyr

A group of unknown armed people kept representatives of the Right Sector radical party for several hours in their base in the town of Zhytomyr on May 27 and then the law enforcement authorities detained them.

Unknown people entered a Zhytomyr administrative building at around 1900 p.m. and a conflict emerged between them and Right Sector representatives, the PR directorate of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry Department for the Zhytomyr region said in a statement on May 28.

“Investigative groups of the Interior Ministry Department and Zhytomyr town police department were sent to the site. Since the law enforcers had information about danger to civilians, the surrounding area was sealed off. Patrol service units and employees of special purpose police subdivisions guarded public order. Traffic police restricted traffic at Berdychivska Street temporarily and sent transport to by-pass the closed area,” the document said.

Talks between Zhytomyr state administration head Sydir Kizin and head of regional Interior Ministry department Yuriy Demyanenko with the individuals, who were in the building, lasted several hours.

“In the end, conflict participants were detained for identification and determining all consequences of the incident,” the press office said.

An armed group did attempt to seize the Right Sector base in Zhytomyr on May 27, Rights Sector press office said.

“The incident occurred during the visit to Zhytomur of central office representatives to change the work of the regional branch. However, instead of explaining tasks and goals to the Zhytomyr office, those, who arrived from Kyiv, has to resist armed people jointly with local Rights Sector representatives. One of the attackers shot several times at the floor during the disarmament. No one was injured,” the press office said.

All attackers were detained by the law enforcement authorities and their arms were seized, the Right Sector said.

“We hope that the Interior Ministry representatives will be able to find out who and why they tried to seizure the Right Sector base in Zhytomyr,” the party’s press office said.
