You're reading: Police: DNA examination confirms suspected Karavan killer’s body found in Kyiv

DNA examination has confirmed that it was Yaroslav Mazurok, whose body was found not far from Syrets Park in Kyiv, and that it was he who shot dead three guards at the Karavan shopping mall. 

“Samples of the material taken from Mazurok’s home, from the murder scene at the mall, as well as samples taken from him were analyzed. The examination results indicate that it was he who committed this crime,” the Public Relations Department of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine reported on Thursday.

The report also says that they found the blood of one of the murdered guards on the shoes, seized in Mazurok’s residence.

“At present, the police have proved that it was Mazurok, who was at the Karavan shopping center and that it was he who committed the crime. In addition, law enforcers are currently checking his involvement in a number of unsolved crimes featuring firearms,” the police said.

As reported, the body of a man resembling Yaroslav Mazurok, the suspect in the murder of guards at a Karavan shopping center, was found in Kyiv on November 7.

According to preliminary police inquiry findings, the man committed suicide. The police say that they took a sample of the man’s DNA to determine whether he was indeed Mazurok.

According to the TSN news program on the 1+1 TV channel, Mazurok’s wife Liudmyla identified the man, whose body was found in Kyiv, as her husband.

On November 8, the police said that the fingerprints of the man are identical to fingerprints taken during the inspection of the murder scene.

According to the ministry, law enforcers found in a pocket of the deceased man the passport of Yaroslav Mazurok, a technical certificate for a Jawa motorbike, as well as Mazurok’s a driver’s license and identification certificate. The police also found a gun with one spent cartridge in the cylinder.

On September 26, a robber shot dead three employees of a private security firm and seriously wounded another one in the Karavan shopping mall in Kyiv. The attacker fled the scene.

On October 5, Ukrainian Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko stated that the killer of three security guards from the Karavan shopping mall in Kyiv was Yaroslav Mazurok, a native of Lviv region, born in 1974, who previously worked at private security firms.
