You're reading: Polish officials: Polish citizens not acting as mercenaries in east Ukraine conflict

Warsaw has denied reports of the involvement of Polish citizens in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier, a number of media outlets reported, citing Ukrainian
sources, that foreign nationals, including Poles, were fighting in
eastern Ukraine with militants. Some media reports said that a whole
division of Polish mercenaries was fighting on the side of Ukrainian
government troops.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland
dissociates itself from media speculation about the alleged involvement
of Polish mercenaries in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The
information available to us does not corroborate such allegations,”
Polish media quoted Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Marcin
Wojciechowski as saying on Aug. 20.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that for a few months
different media outlets have been reporting about the alleged
involvement of Polish citizens in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. So
far, none of these reports have been confirmed, which could indicate
that such allegations are being used as an element of an information
war,” the Polish Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry said, however, that if Poles were fighting in Ukraine then they would be punished.
