Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said he hopes that the association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union will be signed during Lithuania's presidency of the EU in the second half of 2013, Polskie Radio dla Zagranicy reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, Ukraine was one of the subjects of Tusk’s conversation with his German counterpart, Angela Merkel, during a meeting at the 12th Polish-German consultations on Wednesday.

“The Polish prime minister expressed hope that the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU will be signed in November next year, during the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius. Lithuania will hold the presidency of the EU in the second half of 2013,” Polskie Radio dla Zagranicy reported.

Tusk said that he and Merkel agree that in relations with Ukraine it is necessary to show patience and understanding of the geopolitical situation in the country.

Merkel, in turn, said that there are concrete expectations with respect to Ukraine and that different difficulties could be overcome through dialog. The German chancellor also said that the signing of the association agreement was a certain process and that the EU is planning to further hold talks with Kyiv.

Tusk also said that Warsaw would support Ukraine’s European path, Polskie Radio dla Zagranicy reported.
