Ukrainian citizens are almost evenly divided over the prospects for joining the Customs Union, formed by Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, and signing the Association Agreement with the European Union.
A survey, conducted by Kyiv International Institute of Sociology from Feb. 23 to March 11, shows that 41% of respondents want Ukraine to enter the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space today, 39% support the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU, and 19% of those polled are undecided.
A total of 38.4% of respondents said they would vote for Ukraine’s accession to the Russia-Belarus Union and 37.9% said they would support membership in the European Union if a referendum addressing these questions were to be held this coming Sunday.
Eleven percent of those polled refused to take part in such a referendum, and 12% were undecided.
Respondents were also invited to express their views on a situation where Ukraine would be allowed to join the European Union if it agreed to introduce visa rules for non-EU countries, including Russia.
Forty-five percent of those polled said they did not want Ukraine to become an EU member and would like to continue traveling to Russia without visas, 34% took the opposite view, and 19% were undecided.
The survey was conducted in all regions of Ukraine and involved 2,760 respondents aged 18 years and older.
